A mind full of ideas, but don't know where to start yet? Then, take out a piece of paper and get ready to take notes because this will be a very informative blog post.
So many people always reach out to me to ask me for guidance when it comes to starting a blog. I've been a blogger going on three years and even though I do not know it all, I have enough information to help you get started.
Step 1- Know your 'WHY': you have to know WHY you want to start you blog. Is it to be informative? to inspire? personal? Knowing your why will help the audience know what to expect from you and it will help you understand the direction you want to go. Write down all your ideas before you get started.
Step 2- Choose a blogging platform: Choosing a blogging platform it's pretty much the first official thing you have to do. The most known ones are WordPress, Blogger and Tumblr. However, if you use those you will not have your own domain.
Do your research, search what's more convenient for you and affordable because having a blog and owning a domain is not free. I use wix.com and I love this platform because it's super easy to use and navigate. I also created my website all by myself, you can do it too!
Other blogging platforms you can use:
Step 3- Pick your domain: You are probably wondering, what in the heck does 'domain' mean? Well, the domain is basically the URL of your website and you want to keep it short and straight to the point.
Hosting: Hosting is basically the company that puts your website up on the internet so everyone else can see it. Everything will be saved on there. Think of it as a computer hard-drive on the internet where your blog will be saved.
If you decide to host your blog through wix for example, you will have to pay a fee for your domain that usually it last for a year. The fee depends on the hosting site, but there are many others that have competitive rates. This will allow you to have a professional website owned by yourself and that adds value to your brand.
Step 4- Designing your blog: This is the fun part! Find a template that is appealing for the audience you are trying to reach. Also, make sure you use light and neutral colors. Simplicity it's always best! Using bold colors and crazy fonts will have people exit your website real quick! and you don't want that.
- Add cool features like pop ups, make sure it's mobile friendly, add appealing pictures and show your personality though your writing.
Step 5- Be Consistent: Write at least once a month, update your website regularly and make sure there is value in what you share with your audience.
